GREENSBORO, N.C. — The FAA said a pilot landed a small plane on the Urban Loop in Greensboro near Byran Boulevard Wednesday evening after experiencing engine failure.
The administration said the pilot was trying to land at PTI Airport. Greensboro police said PTI Airport Communications got a distress call from the single-engine plane shortly before 8 p.m. The plane then made a forced landing on I-840 Westbound at the I-73 juncture, causing all westbound lanes to close for several hours.
According to officials, the pilot moved the plane to the right shoulder once it landed. The passenger of the aircraft then exited the plane and stood beside it on the shoulder. That's when a person driving a 2007 Infiniti G37 swerved off the road, hitting the plane's passenger before making contact with the aircraft.
The plane's passenger was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. He was treated and ultimately released Wednesday night. No other injuries were reported.
According to the FAA's website, Joseph Fisher, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, is the registered owner of the plane - a 1949 Beechcraft Bonanza, A-35 Fixed Wing single engine.
The highway reopened overnight. Greensboro police is overseeing the investigation.
