High Point family prepares for flooding after rocky past with storms

The Watkins are no strangers to flooding. With Tropical Storm Debby looming, they’re making sure their home is ready.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — The Watkins family has seen their fair share of heavy rain in High Point over the years.

They told WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman every time bad weather comes through, they expect it to flood.

Some of them live near Pendleton Street and shared how they've dealt with floods in the past and how they plan to deal with them moving forward.

April Watkins and her family were born and raised in High Point. She said she is no stranger to flooding in her hometown.

"Manholes usually get stopped up real bad, so the streets kind of flood but back there. The creek overruns a lot and it starts to rise up to the top of the hill in the back," April Watkins said.

She said she's more concerned about flooding taking place at her parent's home than her own home.

"For my parents, it's just the power going out. Plus my sister has a newborn baby here also, so I wanna make sure that they're going to be okay," April Watkins said.

April Watkins said her mother, Bessie Watkins, depends on the power for her L-VAD which keeps her heart pumping.

"It pretty much helps her stay alive," April Watkins said.

"I used to not be afraid of the power going out but since I have all of this electronic equipment with me that I have to be aware of, it scares me," Bessie Watkins said.

The Watkins also worry about the creek in the backyard overflowing as it has in years past.

"Their [April's parents] main concern is, is it gonna come up to the back door and everything?" April Watkins said.

She said there's not much her parents can do outside to prepare for the possible flooding but they will have towels near doorways and ready to soak any water up.

Just two years ago, the family had a scary experience when April's son, Michael Watkins, ran into his great aunt's house to rescue her from flood waters.

"It wasn't something I would do unless I had to, I wasn't trying to be a hero or anything, I just decided to do it," Michael Watkins said. "It [his grandaunt's house] was flooded pretty bad, and she was stuck in the house. So, I walked through the water to her house, got her out, and got onto some dry land."

No matter what comes of these storms, the Watkins are thankful to have each other and the power of family on their side.

"I am very grateful. It's live-saving," Bessie Watkins said.

The Watkins hope to get through the storm without any problems.

If the damage is so bad and people are in need, Guilford County EMS will be setting up shelters in the aftermath of the storms, again, if needed.
