GPD release statement regarding response to city manager incident

Greensboro police shared a statement about the city manager incident for the first time.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — For the first time, the Greensboro police chief is responding to the domestic situation that occurred at the city manager's house back in December.

You might remember when police responded to the home of Taiwo Jaiyeoba after 911 calls made it sound like there was a fight of some sort.

On Friday, Chief John Thompson gave a detailed statement with a timeline of what happened once officers showed up.

He said Jaiyeoba called him immediately afterward, so the chief reached out to responding officers to have them mitigate the situation.

The city manager called Chief Thompson to notify him of the incident shortly after it occurred. Chief Thompson asked him if someone had contacted 911. Chief Thompson then spoke with the first responding officer on scene and instructed them to deescalate the situation, if necessary, separate the parties, document all interviews, and that the watch commander (the highest ranking officer on duty at that time) would be en route.

Thompson also insisted at no time did the city manager ask GPD to treat him any differently during the investigation.

At no time did Mr. Jaiyeoba or anyone from the city manager’s office ask that GPD deviate from its normal investigative procedures.

The chief also shared how investigators brought their findings to the district attorney, who determined no charges should be filed.

The city said Jaiyeoba was the only person who had visible injuries.

At this point, we still don't know exactly what happened that night or what caused it.

Earlier this week, a judge granted a city council request to allow them to view the body camera footage from the incident.

Every council member we spoke with said this was simply a family matter.
