ASHEBORO, N.C. — For the first time, we're hearing from a Greensboro Amazon driver who saved the day back in March after finding a car flipped over into an embankment along her route in Asheboro.
The family identified the driver who flipped her car into an embankment as 76-year-old Shirley Roberts. They said Roberts tried to avoid hitting a dog when she swerved off the road.
Now, Robert's family is expressing their gratitude for Amanda Smith, the Greensboro Amazon driver.
"Amanda is going to be our 'Asphalt Angel' and forever going to be a part of our family," said Robert's daughter-in-law, Eleanor Roberts.
Smith took us back to that March day. She recalled being en route when she noticed a car on its back, wheels sticking up, and the roof completely crushed.
"I could see the taillights blinking, and as I got closer, I could hear music going. I didn't see anybody moving, and I didn't know what was going on," said Smith.
Terrified, Smith called 911. Other drivers began to stop after Smith pulled over to help. They got as close as possible to see if there was any sign of life.
"They called out that she was alive, she was moving, and I was so thankful to hear that," Smith remembered.
Robert's son and daughter-in-law were out of town when they got word of the crash.
"We packed our bag; we get in the truck, and we come back," Roberts described their rush to return home.
When they got back, they found their beloved family member at the hospital, and a few days later, they learned of Smith's quick action.
"We know that Amanda did not have to stop, but she did. We know that there was divine intervention in this whole situation," explained Roberts.
While it was hard for her to explain, Smith says something spiritual caused her to notice Robert's car. Whatever 'it' was the driving force bringing two Triad families together.
Roberts said her mother-in-law crashed after trying to avoid hitting a dog.
The family said the crash caused her to break a femur, ribs, and a bone in her neck. She also added that her mother-in-law went through surgery and said she should be just fine over time.
