Family speaks on woman killed in Greensboro hit-and-run

Keith Steele spoke about his wife, 70-year-old Gayle Steele, who was fatally hit by a car on Dellwood Drive last Thursday.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — 70-year-old Gayle Steele's family said she was putting up yard sale signs when someone hit her.

Keith and Gayle Steele had been married for nearly 50 years before she was taken from him in a gruesome hit-and-run.

Both he and his daughter, Amber Steele, spoke with WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman about who Gayle was.

They said finding more answers will help bring more healing.

It's a loss that's left them looking for the right words to say.

"I guess it hasn't, um, it hasn't hit me yet," Gayle's Husband, Keith said.

"I don't think I've processed it yet exactly," Gayle's Daughter, Amber said.

Gayle was taken from her family during a hit-and-run incident at the corner of West Cone Boulevard and Dellwood Drive.

She was known around the neighborhood for putting on yard sales. Her family said she was hit by a car after putting up her last yard sale sign for the night at the corner of Cone and Dellwood.

It's a situation her daughter will never fully understand, "I just wish that the person had actually stopped and stayed and taken responsibility for what they did," Amber said.

Her husband said he is having a difficult time processing the loss, "I've been busy, just trying to stay busy," Keith said.

Her daughter describes her as selfless, "I think she was always somebody who brought other people together. She was a people person," Amber said.

She said, she was not only her mom but her very best friend, "You know, somebody I could argue with and still love," Amber said.

Gayle loved hosting yard sales and making her lawn a source of joy for her neighbors but it didn't stop there, her decorations often went beyond her front yard.

"You know why the flowers are on the car? So she could find it out in the parking lot," Keith said while laughing. "I plan on keeping it [the car] that way."

All because he wants to keep his wife's touch and her memory alive.

As of right now, there has been no arrest in this case but Greensboro police have located the suspect's car.

Greensboro Crime Stoppers has offered a $5,000 reward for any information that could lead to an arrest.
