Nearby business captured fiery car crash into an ATM all on camera

A car ended up scorched after it went flying into an ATM. Also caught on video, a bystander running to save the driver out of the burning car.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Wild surveillance footage shows the aftermath of a car that slammed into an Greensboro ATM, a nearby business caught the fiery crash on camera.

WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman got reaction from the owner of that business who saw the terrifying scene unfold.

"It was like, I don't know how it happened, you know, it was so bad," Owner of George K's Catering and Banquet Hall, Queenie Lao said.

A car slammed into a nearby ATM on North Holden Road at around 10 a.m. Sunday.

The surveillance camera at George K's caught the entire ordeal on camera but Lao only heard about it when her sister called.

"I was cooking so I turned on my camera and I saw the police and the car was burning and what I saw is the lady run out from the car," Lao said.

She said it's something that's stuck with her.

Also caught on video, a bystander running to rescue the driver before the car erupted into flames.

"I was shocked. I was happy to see her come out alive," Lao said.

Greensboro police said the driver had to go to the hospital with serious injuries.

Although she hates to hear that, she said she's grateful the banquet hall didn't have any events that morning, which could've made it much worse.

"A week before this, we had a food truck here, which had a lot of people here, you know, and if that happened that day… it would be so sad," Lao said.

She said she doesn't know what repairs will look like yet but she knows it'll hit her pocket, "I don't know, [it may cost] a few thousand dollars," Lao said.

All in all, she's relieved it wasn't worse, "I'm glad that she's safe, that's all."

That it was a freak accident with a positive outcome thanks to a good samaritan who ran in to help.

Police haven't identified the person who helped the driver. It's not even clear whether they stayed until officers got there.

As for the investigation, police said they don't know why the car hit the ATM.
