GREENSBORO, N.C. — We had a few cool August days, but that doesn't mean fall is right around the corner. No matter what they may be serving up at the coffee shop, we still have a ways to go before cool air settles in for good here in North Carolina.
With that in mind, the WFMY News 2 Weather Team is breaking down when you can typically expect cooler weather for good around our state.
When will it cool down?
Average highs through the middle of September will stay mainly in the low-to-mid 80s. We don't really start to "feel like" fall until late September or even into October, when average highs have settled in the 70s with overnight lows in the crisp 50s. From there, we'll start to drop back into the 60s and eventually 50s in November.
Technically, the beginning of fall — known as the Fall Equinox — begins September 22, but temperatures take some time to cool down. Though you will have outliers on the warmer or cooler side, average highs will gradually take time to change.
When will leaves in my area change color?
You will notice temperature changes well before leaves begin to turn color in your neighborhood. The majority of the Piedmont will see color changes by the middle of November, with westernmost counties (Wilkes, Alleghany, Surry) possibly starting to see changes by late October. The Fall Foliage peak will come and go by the end of November for North Carolina.
Remember, if you're wanting to take a mountain trip to see lots of colorful leaves this fall, October is the month to go!
