Greensboro restaurant rallies around Eastern Randolph crash victim and her family

Sarah Edwards was a passenger in the accident that killed two teens and injured another late last week.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A popular Greensboro restaurant is doing its part to rally around the family of one of the victims of last week's deadly crash involving four Eastern Randolph High students.

Sarah Edwards was a passenger in the crash that left two teenage boys dead and another teenage girl severely injured last Thursday in Ramseur.

Edwards has been in the hospital since and is working to recover from several injuries suffered in the incident.

Edwards' mother works at Freeman's Grub & Pub in Greensboro. Max Hathaway, the restaurant's general manager, told WFMY News 2 on Tuesday the instinct to help out the family was a natural one.

"You know, you can't thrive and survive all on your own," Hathaway said. "I was raised in a big tribe. My parents had a lot of friends and whenever something like this would happen, all their friends showed an outpouring of support. If I was raised like that, why would I not want to do that as well?"

Since the accident, Edwards' mother has not left her side at the hospital and has thus been unable to work a normal schedule. Hathaway told her to "take as much time as you need," but the restaurant also went one step further.

The owners of Freeman's Pub donated money toward Sarah's medical bills. The rest of the restaurant staff is planning to send gift cards for food so they don't have to rely on the dining options at the hospital.

"I know how it was being in the hospital, having kids," Hathaway said. "Hospital food sucks. We don't want to have them, for however long they're there, we don't want them to have to eat that constantly, you know?"

The other teenage girl injured in the crash last week, Macie Maness, was released from the hospital Tuesday after receiving treatment for spinal fractures and broken ribs, among other injuries.

There is no information on how much longer Sarah will have to spend in the hospital. But make sure to follow WFMY News 2 for the latest updates on this ongoing story.
