WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Confederate statue that used to stand outside the old Winston-Salem Courthouse is now in the possession of Valor Memorial Park in Denton, according to Winston-Salem deputy city attorney Jerry Kontos.
The monument came down in 2019 and has been in storage ever since.
Attorneys for the City of Winston-Salem and the United Daughters of the Confederacy went head-to-head during oral arguments in front of the state's justices.
The two sides disagreed about who owns the statue and where it should stand.
Earlier this year and after nearly five years of debating, Winston-Salem mayor Allen Joines said they are "close to reaching an agreement that will settle a couple of remaining legal issues."
Now that the agreement has been reached, the statue has been moved to Valor Memorial Park in Denton. According to its website, the park plans to put the monument on display this summer.
