Winston-Salem Confederate statue to move soon, mayor confirms

After nearly five years of debating, the mayor said they are "close to reaching agreement that will settle a couple of remaining legal issues."

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Confederate statue that used to sit outside the old Winston-Salem Courthouse will be moved to a new location soon, according to Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines.

The monument came down in 2019 and has been in storage ever since.

Attorneys for the City of Winston-Salem and the United Daughters of the Confederacy went head-to-head during oral arguments in front of the state's justices.

The two sides disagreed about who owns the statue and where it should stand.

Now, after nearly five years of debating, the mayor said they are "close to reaching an agreement that will settle a couple of remaining legal issues."

Once an agreement is reached, the statue will be relocated to "a new location that all parties have approved."

The new location has not been announced yet.
