HIGH POINT, N.C. — An 11-hour standoff is over after deputies arrested a man that barricaded himself inside his home after a traffic stop, chase, and shooting at police in High Point overnight.
Deputies said 44-year-old Charles Nichols barricaded himself inside his home on Blackberry Ridge Drive around 11:30 p.m. Monday.
Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers said Nichols is a person that deals with some life challenges and made it clear (to him) that they were there to help him.
Nichols was not injured during the incident.
"I did get a chance to speak with him, let him know that we were not here to hurt him and that nobody will hurt him," Rogers said. "We're here to help him and to help him get the help that he needs."
Deputies stopped Nichols while he was riding his motorcycle. He then led police on a chase to Blackberry Ridge Drive where he went inside a home and barricaded himself.
They said Nichols shot at officers and refused to come out of the house. There were no hostages, and they made no contact with him at the time.
"It took about ten minutes to talk with him about coming out, he requested to talk with the Sheriff," Rogers said.
The standoff did not impact any nearby schools or businesses. A reverse 911 call was made so neighbors were aware of the situation.
Nichols was booked into the Guilford County Detention Center-High Point and charged with:
- Assault with a Firearm on Law Enforcement
- Resist Delay Obstruct Public Official
- Communicating Threats
- Speeding to Elude Arrest
He is being held on a $255,000 secured bond.
This investigation is ongoing.
