A couple of days away from Sgt. Dale Nix's funeral, support continues to roll in

Tunnel to Towers, a nonprofit, to pay off mortgage of Greensboro Police Sgt. Dale Nix. Greensboro Grasshoppers selling jersey's, all proceeds go to Nix family.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — On Dec. 30, 2023, Sgt. Nix was shot and killed at the Sheetz gas station on Sandy Ridge Road. Greensboro police said he was trying to stop a crime in progress.

Sgt. Nix served the city faithfully for 23 years.

His death has left a void in the community as Sgt. Nix was more than an officer who served his community — he was a hero who inspired everyone he came in contact with. His legacy also left a lasting impression on the Triad. So many people, showing their support.

"We are incredibly grateful for the community support, and love. Things that have been given to the department in terms of time, and kindness, and cards, and flowers really to honor Sgt. Nix really is just incredible. Obviously, everybody inside the department is heartbroken, and the family is struggling. It’s a life taken way too soon. He was a father, and a husband, and had 1000 roles, and oversaw an amazing squad," said Jenny Caviness, Greensboro Police Department Community Engagement Director.

The memorial at Police Headquarters continues to grow, reminding officers of Sergeant Dale Nix's lasting impact.

Caviness explained, "he was an amazing man, a good father, an excellent police officer. The world always searches for good, and he was good and it's hard to find that."

And a good friend to many, including the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

That's why the team is selling game-worn jerseys from previous seasons for $50.

All proceeds are going to Sgt. Nix's family.

Tim Vangel, Greensboro Grasshoppers General Manager said, "we just wanted to do whatever we could to help support the family, and show the community, what hopefully everybody can get behind, and help as they can."

A nonprofit dedicated to helping the families of fallen first responders will pay off the mortgage of Greensboro Police Sergeant Dale Nix.

“Tunnel to Towers is honored to pay off the mortgage for the family of Sgt. Nix. We hope the knowledge they can stay in their home provides comfort to his family as they grieve this tremendous loss.” Frank Siller, Chairman and CEO of Tunnel to Towers Foundation said.

“I don’t think there is anything more important than taking care of the families left behind of those who have died in the line of duty," Siller said. “When you lose a loved one, it is so terrifying, it is so disturbing, you’re mourning. Your soulmate is gone. The father of your child is gone. You go through so much."
