Witnesses recall the moment small plane made emergency landing on I-840 in Greensboro

Witnesses recall what they saw as they were driving by the plane as it was making its emergency landing on the urban loop Wednesday night.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — WFMY News 2 obtained 911 calls that recall the moment a small plane made an emergency landing on I-840 in Greensboro Wednesday night.

"I just saw a small plane land on 840, I'm not kidding," one caller said to dispatch.

PTI Airport said they got a call about a small single-engine plane experiencing a mechanical failure. The pilot decided to make an emergency landing on I-840 on the urban loop near the Bryan Boulevard exit. It blocked all westbound lanes.

Police say a car clipped the plane once it landed, causing minor damage to the car and plane. People passing by the scene were surprised to say the least.

Greensboro resident Katelyn Pruitt was driving on I-840 when she saw the plane landing.

"I was looking at it and was like I think it's going to land on the highway, It's getting way too close too fast so we kind of pulled off," Pruitt said. "We saw cars coming and we saw the plane and we didn't want to be a part of a crazy wreck."

Resident Mike Lambeth said he was also driving by when he saw the plane.

"I saw the pilot, I guess they were giving him CPR and everything. Hopefully he is alright," he added.

GPD says there were two people on the plane and one of them was taken to the hospital. They are expected to be okay.
