July 4 beach celebrations brought almost 200 rip current rescues in North Carolina

Local National Weather Services reported numerous lifeguard rescues during the days leading up to the holiday and after.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — While the July 4th holiday brought patriotic cheer, many flocked to North Carolina's beaches to celebrate. This led to nearly 200 people being rescued from rip currents in four days.

Wilmington's National Weather Service office said 190 of these instances happened between Wednesday and Saturday in New Hanover County. Seventy-nine of the rip current rescues happened on July 5 at Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Kure Beach.

Carolina Beach saw the most rescues on July 4 with 35 and Wrightsville Beach reported 27. This brought the total number in Hanover County to 70, according to NWS Wilmington.

On July 3, there were 17 rip current rescues at Carolina Beach.

Moreover, up north, NWS Newport/Morehead City reported two rip current rescues at North Topsail Beach in Pender County. One was reported in the Outer Banks at Coquina Beach --all on July 4.
