GREENSBORO, N.C. — With hot weather, many of us are wearing flip-flops, sandals and even going barefoot! But what impact could our summer shoe choice have on our health? And do you know the do’s and don’ts for keeping your feet healthy?
WFMY News 2 spoke to Dr. Matthew Wagoner with Cone Health Triad Foot & Ankle Center. He answered common questions about foot safety.
CAN I GO BAREFOOT ON THE BEACH?
Dr. Wagoner recommends wearing sandals or water shoes on the beach. It can be easy to get an infection from a cut or even a blister. Beach-goers need to be careful of rocks, shells and glass that could puncture the skin of the bottom of a foot.
He says flip-flops have improved in quality. Make sure you wear flip-flops made with good materials.
SHOULD I WEAR DIFFERENT SHOES FOR DIFFERENT SUMMER ACTIVITIES?
Yes. For example, hikers need shoes that are both supportive and have a little wiggle room. It's also important to take into account the environment. Some hikes may require waterproof shoes.
For long walks, such as through an amusement park, traditional athletic shoes are needed. Dr. Wagoner encourages you to get your shoes fitted for your foot. Feet are not shaped the same, so a shoe that is comfortable and supportive for one person, may not be for the next.
