Surry County Schools to begin using metal detectors at middle and high school football games

The metal detectors will be placed at the entrances of athletic venues in middle and high schools.

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — Surry County Schools announced they will begin using metal detectors at middle and high school football games on Aug. 29.

The school district said in a statement released on Aug. 26 that the new security measure is an extension of existing safety guidelines. The metal detectors are planned to be placed at the entrances of athletic facilities, including gyms and stadiums, to provide better protection to students and keep prohibited items out of venues.

“The addition of metal detectors at our athletic events reinforces our commitment to providing a safe and welcoming atmosphere for everyone. We appreciate the community's cooperation and understanding as we implement these important changes,” Superintendent Dr. Travis Reeves said.

The school district will continue its clear bag policy in addition to the metal detectors at athletic venues. According to the Surry County Schools clear bag policy, non-clear large bags, including duffel bags, backpacks, and diaper bags, are not allowed at athletic events happening in the county.

Surry County Schools advises students, parents, and families to arrive early to athletic games and events to ensure there are no security or safety issues.
