SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — Surry County Schools will begin a new clear bag policy for all athletic events held within the district, effective Jan. 1, 2024, the district says.

"Our priority remains the safety and security of all individuals attending our athletic events," Superintendent Dr. Travis Reeves said. "These procedures are designed to ensure everyone's safety and streamline the entry process, making it consistent with the practices you might have encountered at college stadiums and other large event venues.

The clear bag policy will enhance safety measures and make security measures easier all while creating a safe environment for attendees.

Key aspects of the new clear bag policy include:

  • Acceptable Bags: Only clear bags that are transparent and not larger than 12"x 6"x 12" will be permitted at athletic events. Small clutch purses (no larger than 4.5"x 6.5") with or without handles or straps may also be allowed.

  • Prohibited Bags: Non-clear backpacks, large purses, duffel bags, diaper bags, and other non-transparent containers will not be allowed within the premises of athletic events.
