What to know as Triad students return to school

Here's a look at what's new in schools as well as the academic calendars.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Monday, August 26 is the first day of school for many Triad school districts. For many families, the beginning of a new school year is exciting and full of preparation. Keep reading to find out more information about new updates to schools, transportation changes, school calendars, and school contact information.

What's new in Guilford County Schools:

Guilford County Schools is keeping mental health and well-being as a top priority for students by providing a virtual tutoring helpline. The helpline can be accessed by visiting the GCS Tutoring Website: https://www.gcsnc.com/tutoring.

The district plans to invest nearly $20 million to support student mental health services, and telehealth clinics will be coming to seven schools, according to a statement released on Aug. 23 from GCS officials. GCS said they are working to replace radios in buses and install new vape detectors in schools.

At high schools across the county, new Career and Technical (CTE) courses will be offered. Students will be able to obtain an EMT credential and participate in firefighting, medical, and law enforcement preparation programs.

Our team spoke to some parents who said they are excited for the school year. Our team stopped by Claxton Elementary to check in with some parents.

Martha Chaires told us her son has autism and started a year after COVID.

"We've never had a real first day of school before this is the first time I got to walk him into his class and it was so nice to see parents and kids swarming the building," she shared.

Guilford County Schools transportation:

Bus transportation remains a top concern for parents, families, and students. GCS announced they are expanding their walking zones in accordance with state law. Officials from GCS said they have processed more than 37,000 on-time transportation requests and have grown their van fleet to support students during the transportation change.

Alamance-Burlington Schools HVAC updates:

New upgrades were made in several ABSS schools to increase airflow and protect against mold. Elementary and middle schools received window replacements, and new HVAC systems in gyms, classrooms, and on rooftops.

The new HVAC upgrades to ABSS schools come after reports of mold in many of its schools last year. ABSS officials said they hope the new upgrades will help students to breathe better and feel safer.
