Woman claims cop impersonator tried to pull her over along I-40

A woman said someone tried to pull her over Tuesday and it was not a law enforcement officer.

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — The Graham Police Department is reminding the community to be on alert after officers got a report of a driver trying to impersonate an officer.

According to police, a man in a white Kia with California plates tried to pull a woman over while traveling along I-40 Tuesday.

The woman told officers she just left Mebane when the incident happened.

The woman told police the Kia was following her closely, tailgating, swerving, and trying to get her to stop while flashing green lights and waving a badge.

Graham Police Captain, Tony Velez said the last time he heard of a situation like this was about a year ago.

"It's happened before," he said. "Unfortunately, we've heard of this. I've been on this job for 23 years, so it's not my first-time hearing of something like this. But it's slightly alarming, and I understand it's very alarming for the public to worry about somebody impersonating one of us," said Velez.

Captain Velez said to expect blue lights when getting pulled over, never green.

"Generally speaking, green lights are on like security personnel like the hospital [or] private security. So, that's not something that police officers do, and security officers don't have the authority to pull people over on streets. So, that's what we want to remind the public of: be mindful."

Police said the woman was not hurt and the Kia driver eventually drove off towards Greensboro.

If you are pulled over in Graham, Captain Velez said it will probably be by one of these cars: a Crown Victoria, Tahoe, or a Charger.
