3 more people arrested in Mebane deadly home invasion

The home invasion happened in March 2024.

MEBANE, N.C. — The Orange County Sheriff's Office announced three more arrests in connection with the March 2024 murder of Jerry Lee Driggers in a home invasion.

Demarcus Tatum, 28, Christopher Hamlett, 49, and Scotty Pleasants, 42, face first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping, and felony conspiracy charges.

Investigators also charged Tatum with possession of a firearm by a felon.

The men broke into Driggers' home on US Highway 70 West near Hillsborough shortly after midnight on March 3. They shot Driggers twice in an exchange of gunfire. Driggers died several hours later at the hospital.

Near the scene, deputies were able to locate Clarence Brandon Hayes, 28, in a parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds inflicted by Driggers as he confronted the burglars.

After Hayes was arrested, investigators continued working the case, developing leads against Tatum, Hamlett, and Pleasants, who are from Durham, Hillsborough, and Creedmoor. All of them were arrested between late July and mid-August, they are currently in the Orange County Detention Center and being held without bond.

Hayes pled guilty in July to multiple charges including second-degree murder.

If anyone has further information or questions about this case, please call Lieutenant Dylan Hendricks at 919-245-2951.
