Drunk driver plows into at least 12 cars in Winston-Salem neighborhoods, police say

Ann Hines and her husband's cars were hit while parked in the driveway on Saturday.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Police said a suspected drunk driver plowed through Winston-Salem neighborhoods on Saturday and damaged at least a dozen cars.

Officers arrested 36-year-old Mitchell Jacob Davis after he crashed his work truck near 7th and Broad Streets.

Police said Davis crashed into at least 12 cars on Robinhood, Stratford Road, West End, and the downtown area beforehand.

Ann Hines and her husband's vehicles were hit.

"It's about as close as I've been to a near-death experience because if I decided to watch, it would not have been good," Hines said.

She was cleaning her car in the driveway of her Robinhood Road home just seconds before she and her husband's vehicles were struck.

"At the top of the hill, I heard this really loud screech and there was a truck that seemed to be coming like 60 miles an hour with a junk trailer behind it," Hines said. "It didn't feel good. So I got out of the way and about 10 seconds later, he crashed."

Her Subaru is totaled and her husband only had his truck for two months. They hope insurance will cover the costs.

"I was kind of in shock, but buoyant in a way, thinking I really am lucky," Hines said. "Everything that's messed up is replaceable."

The family is just happy their autistic son wasn't home, because they say he often stands outside to watch the cars pass by.

Police said no one was injured.

Davis was arrested and charged with misdemeanor DWI, misdemeanor transporting an open container of alcoholic beverage, misdemeanor driving with a suspended/revoked license, misdemeanor reckless driving, and misdemeanor hit and run.
