'Why didn't the person just stop?' | Family mourns 19-year-old killed in hit-and-run

Darrin Alston Swann was making a trip to the pharmacy. He never made it home.

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — Darrin Swann's family said he was a light in their lives.

"He always had a smile on his face, he loved trucks," Aunt Kimbe Ashby said.

The 19-year-old from Alamance County was making a simple trip to the pharmacy on Wednesday.

He never made it home.

State Troopers said a box truck sideswiped Swann's vehicle on County Line Road, causing him to crash into a ditch. Swann died at the scene. Investigators said the driver didn't stop.

Swann's family questions how this could happen.

"There's really no words that we can say except we don't understand why the person didn't just stop," Ashby said.

19 years old, but already knew what he wanted in life. Swann's family said he was madly in love with his fiancé Shelby.

"Darrin had always told me that one of the biggest things he wanted to do for Shelby was to get a really good job so he could buy a house and eventually have a family with her," cousin Kelsey McKinney said.

The day after the crash, police found the box truck driver, 45-year-old Desmone Reeder, nearly 500 miles away in New Jersey. He is from Greenville, South Carolina.

Troopers haven't said what charges the box truck driver faces at this time.

Swann's funeral service is set to take place at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call North Carolina State Highway Patrol at 1-800-445-8621 or dial *47.
