'An innocent bystander' | Man killed in Dudley High School shooting wasn't the intended target, prosecutors say

In September, Matthew Grant was shot and killed after a football game at Dudley High School — he was not the intended target.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — New details were released about a second suspect connected to a deadly shooting at Dudley High School.

Back in September, 59-year-old Matthew Grant, a community staple, was shot and killed after a football game at the high school.

Last week, Greensboro police arrested a 17-year-old in connection to his murder. This week, a second suspect, 18-year-old Amari Singletary, was arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including first-degree murder.

During a first appearance, Greensboro police said Singletary was identified as a gang member. Prosecutors also said they found out through a Crimestoppers tip that Grant was not his intended target, but instead an innocent bystander.

A judge found Singletary to be a "danger to the community" and said his bond will remain on hold.

Police said he was charged with the following:

  • First Degree Murder
  • Discharge of a Weapon Into Occupied Property
  • Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • Possession of a handgun by a minor
  • Possession of a Firearm on Educational Property
  • Felony and Misdemeanor Hit and Run

Who is Matthew Grant?

Grant was a minister who loved to go to Dudley games, which he attended decades ago.

He would referee Dudley's football games every so often. He ministered at the church across the street from the school, New Light Missionary Baptist Church.

His cousin and fellow minister at New Light, Reverend Tracy Moore, said he loved the community he served.

"He would go to any game; basketball, baseball.," Moore said. "He was not actually refereeing on that Friday night but he was just there attending the festivities with the rest of the community. He loved Dudley, he loved A&T, and he just loved coaching too."

Although he wasn't one of the referees that Friday when the shooting took place, Moore said she believes he was out there inviting young people at the game to the church's youth services.

Please keep Grant's friends and family in your thoughts during this holiday season.
