GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro police said the driver involved in a deadly flag crew crash on North Murrow Boulevard in January turned herself in Tuesday morning.
Police charged Sydnee Dyson, 20, with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision with a person/vehicle, and two counts of felony failure to move over resulting in serious injury/death.
She was given a $25,000 bond and was released.
On Jan. 29, two workers were closing a lane on North Murrow Blvd. Monday when Dyson's car hit them. One of the men died and another was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
WFMY News 2 met a passerby who was heading to another job when he saw what happened. BJ Bodkin said he quickly pulled over and called 911.
“I was tearing up a little bit with these guys because you feel helpless. You do what you know to do, but other than that, I’m not trained, so I was just trying to help them out,” Bodkin said.
Bodkin runs a car detail and maintenance company, so he already had some tools in his van to help. He listened for instructions from the 911 operator.
“Ran over there, did what the 911 operator told me to do. She said grab towels. I had tons of towels with me, so that worked out great – and it was horrific. It was really bad,” Bodkin recalled.
The workers who were hit were employed by a company called Flagger Force. The company released the following statement:
“We are deeply saddened to share that Flagger Force employee, Randolph Westenfelder, passed away on Monday, January 29 as a result of injuries sustained during an incident involving a vehicle while performing his duties in Greensboro, North Carolina. Flagger Force employee, David Peterson, who was also involved in the incident sustained critical injuries. At Flagger Force, we take the safety of our employees, our clients, and the community very seriously. We are devastated by this tragedy and continue to work with the authorities and conduct an internal investigation. Out of respect for those involved and in light of the ongoing investigation, we do not have additional information to share at this time.”
The following statement was released from the Flagger Force’s VP of risk and safety:
“On Thursday, February 15, charges were presented to the driver who was involved in the tragic incident in Greensboro, North Carolina, that resulted in the death of a Flagger Force employee and critical injury of another. The driver was presented with one infraction for failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision with a person/vehicle, one misdemeanor for death by vehicle, and two felony charges for failing to slow/change lanes for an authorized public service vehicle.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangerous conditions those who work on or near the roadway face every day. Ensuring stringent laws designed to protect these individuals are in place and effectively enforced is imperative. In addition, raising awareness of the real dangers and impacts of violating these laws is vital. At Flagger Force, we encourage motorists to slow down, avoid distractions, and obey all signs and laws when driving through a work zone to help keep our communities moving safely.”
