WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — An 18-year-old pleaded guilty to shooting and killing a woman in Winston-Salem in August 2022, according to district attorney Jim O'Neill.
The Winston-Salem Police Department said Ashley Hartwell was shot in the head on 17th Street on Aug. 22, 2022. She was listed in critical condition, but she did not survive.
After an investigation, police said the suspect, who was 16 years old at the time of the shooting, knew Hartwell, and this was not a random act.
At the time of his arrest, police said they charged Demetrius Michael White as a juvenile.
Police said White was also a dropout of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS).
The district attorney's office had since transferred the offender to adult court to hold the defendant accountable.
A judge sentenced him to a maximum of 16 and a half years in prison.
