Bar Latino murder suspect appears in court

Investigators said they arrested 32-year-old Jose Luis Rea-Lopez on June 14 for a shooting that happened at Bar Latino back in January.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A man accused of murder outside of a Greensboro bar will remain in jail without bond, according to a judge, after a court appearance on Monday, June 17.

Investigators said they arrested 32-year-old Jose Luis Rea-Lopez on June 14 for a shooting that happened at Bar Latino back in January.

Police said he shot and killed Gabriel Salazar-Lopez; he also injured his brother, Jonathan Salazar-Lopez.

What Happened

Gabriel Salazar-Lopez and Jonathan Salazar-Lopez were at a restaurant at 3 p.m. when they noticed two out of four men making gang gestures toward Jonathan Salazar-Lopez. Gabriel Salazar-Lopez said he had a bad feeling, told his brother, and took a picture of the men with his phone.

Investigators said later that evening, Gabriel and Jonathan Salazar-Lopez saw the same men from the restaurant at Bar Latino, where they made gang gestures again. As the brothers left the bar, Jonathan Salazar-Lopez saw a white work van with a ladder attached to it leaving the parking lot. He then heard four to five shots. Jonathan Salazar-Lopez was grazed, but Gabriel Salazar-Lopez was shot.

After the shooting, the van left the area, and witnesses talked about their clothing, which matched the clothing that the brothers saw earlier at the restaurant, according to investigators. Police checked cameras and caught a photo of the van and the license plate. The photo Jonathan Salazar-Lopez had taken earlier that day showed the men at the restaurant beginning to circle the community.

Once they found out who the person was after the family received a message on Facebook, they were able to aid police in the investigation.

Rea-Lopez will return to court on Aug. 15.
