GREENSBORO, N.C. — Almost exactly three years after he was brought on as the new police chief for North Carolina A&T, Jermaine Cherry is retiring from the position, according to a Facebook post by the University's police department.
"Chief Jermaine Cherry has served our community with dedication and distinction for eight years," the UPD said in a statement. "Under his guidance, the department flourished, fostering strong relationships within the community and implementing innovative strategies to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the campus community."
Prior to joining the UPD at A&T, Cherry served on several other campuses, including Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte and East Carolina University in Greeneville. He also spent some time at the Wilson Police Department.
Cherry was hired as the A&T police chief back in Aug. 2021. Last fall, he spoke with WFMY News 2 about security around the school's homecoming celebrations.
Cherry's retirement comes at the end of a busy summer for the members of the N.C. A&T police force. Back in June, the University announced that its assistant police chief, Bobby Cuthbertson, became the first A&T law enforcement professional to complete the 10-week National Academy training conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Quantico, Va.
