HPU celebrates life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with annual Day of Service

High Point University is continuing tradition with its annual MLK Day of Service; a national "day of service" -- a day on, not off, per its mantra.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not just a day of celebration but also a day of service.

High Point University students, faculty and community members kick off their annual Day of Service where everyone is asked to participate in a variety of community service projects in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 15.

Students will serve the community through projects to revitalize local organizations, clean areas of the city of High Point, pack thousands of seeds for the community, and assemble care kits for veterans.

We caught up with Abby Forrence, a Health Education AmeriCorps VISTA with High Point University as she shared some of the exciting things happening for this year's MLK Day of Service, including the 'Thank You' Project.

"There's going to be an event on Washington Street where we are serving the community and it all falls in line with the 'Thank You Project' for the High Point 26 who participated in the Woolworth Store sit in in the 60s so I think it's really important to acknowledge the history of High Point in the Civil Right movement," Florrence said.

Florrence's helps to lead the D-UP, Inc., a Health and Education organization helping families develop skills, understand nutrition and up rise education. While volunteering is one of the ways to be of service to your community. Florrence emphasized how servitude can start small.

"Just reflect on something that you can bring to the table you can donate things you are thinking of getting rid of it and also just showing up and being in the community you are looking to serve is a great way to be of service," Florrence said.

The annual MLK Day of Service will kick off at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the parking lot between 201 4th Street and 215 4th Street in High Point.
