United Way of Greater High Point and partners create winter care kits for those in need for MLK Day

United Way of Greater High Point honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by creating winter care kits for the homeless community.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — United Way of Greater High Point is honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by creating winter care kits for the homeless community.

The African American Initiative (AAI) of the United Way of Greater High Point is partnering with High Point LEAP to collect items for winter care kits for those in need in the High Point area.

This initiative is one that the community can also get involved in.

"The African-American Initiative of United Way of Greater High Point wanted to do something to help and this is one way that we can help and also give the community a chance to give back and help those in need," said Latoya Bullock, Vice President of Community Impact for United Way of Greater High Point.

The items they are asking the public to donate include flashlights, lip balm, nail clippers, travel wipes, tissues, lotion, and gloves.

The service project Bullock said is an effort to show love.

"It’s a day on for us instead of a day off our organization has decided to do that over the past years and to offer the opportunity to show the kindness and the love and the inspiration that Dr. King wanted for everyone to work together to be treated as humans to be respected," Bullock said.

United Way of Greater High Point said you can donate by dropping off items at their office at 815 Phillips Avenue and online at their website.

People can also donate through Amazon Wishlist

Items on their donations list can be shipped to their office from other stores as well.

Cash donations are also accepted.

Donations will be accepted until Sunday.

United Way will be packaging the items Monday from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. at Life on Lexington Church.

"We want to make sure that people know that just because someone is homeless doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve to have some of the basic human rights and things that others do. We want to share with them our love and that we care about them and we still know that they are a part of our community," Bullock said.
