What to know ahead of the Fun Fourth Freedom Festival

A fun way to celebrate the fourth of July is with a run, festival, and fireworks!

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Downtown Greensboro's annual Fourth of July celebration is back! The Fun Fourth Festival is happening Thursday, July 4 in downtown Greensboro.

This year's event again happens in two parts: the Freedom Fest and Freedom Run. But none of it happens without volunteers! Organizers need hundreds of volunteers to make the day's events happen. Roles include set up, clean up, parking, and more!

Downtown Greensboro Inc says 50,000 people will be in our area for The Fun Fourth Festival which is really great for the businesses. Those people coming to the city are going to need somewhere to park.

"There will be a lot of parking decks on the foot print as well as city parking decks free on the weekends. They have Church Street deck, Green Street deck, as well as February One and then paid parking on the Lewis Street parking lot," said Cassie Richardson, Digital Marketing and Community Outreach Manager with Downtown Greensboro Inc.

The Freedom Run will feature a 10k, 5k, and one-mile fun run. The race starts and finishes at Center City Park in the heart of downtown Greensboro. People are allowed to walk as long as they can finish the race in two hours. Jogging strollers are allowed but must have a minimum of 6″ wheels. Pets are not allowed. Registration is $20 for the one-mile fun run, $40 for the 5K and $50 for the $10K. (Prices will increase after June 30, 2024 at 11:59p) To register, click here.

The Freedom Fest is happening from 1p-6p on Elm Street. The festival will feature live music on multiple stages. There will also be multiple food trucks on hand to make sure you can stay full and support local businesses while walking the festival!  Since July tends to be hot, there will be lots of water fun! In the Beat the Heat Water Play space, there will be a dunk tank, water slides, and sprinklers! There will also be axe throwing, weddings, super heroes, and more! Free parking is available in all city, parking decks, and surface lots.

WFMY News 2 will also be at the festival with our treat trailer! Be sure to stop by, say hi to the members of Team 2, and get some Fourth of July swag!

Fireworks will be at the Greensboro Grasshoppers stadium after their home game, which starts at 6:30pm against the Aberdeen IronBirds. You must have a ticket to watch the fireworks inside the stadium. Buy tickets here.
