Fighting hunger! Students collect donated cereal boxes for local food pantries

Southwest Elementary is gearing up for its annual cereal domino challenge.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Students and staff at Southwest Elementary School in Greensboro are fighting food insecurity in a major way.

The school is preparing for its annual Cereal Box Challenge. The goal is to collect cereal boxes to create dominos in the hallways of the school. All the boxes in the domino chain will be donated to A Simple Gesture.

“It's just so important for students to understand that there are so many families in our county that are hungry and food insecure and how much food insecurity can affect a family,” Assistant Principal Alison Snyder said. “We have really wanted them to learn about giving back."

Last year the school was able to collect 700 boxes. Snyder said she hopes the students can exceed that goal this year with more than 7,000 boxes.

“We are so excited to partner with other community organizations and we've created an Amazon link so people can quickly help us get donated boxes of cereal,” Snyder said. “We’re so excited to just make it as easy as possible for people to donate. The kids are getting excited about it as well."

In addition to collecting cereal boxes, each month, each grade level donates different food items to some of the smaller food banks in the county.

Cereal donations will be taken through March 31. The domino drop will be on April 2.
