Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority honoring Dr. King with service project

The Beta Iota Omega Chapter will host the MLK Freedom Walk. They are collecting paper goods and food gift cards to support children experiencing homelessness.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Several organizations will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with service projects throughout the City of Greensboro on Monday.

The Beta Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will host the MLK Freedom Walk. The sorority, which is rooted in service, is celebrating Dr. King's legacy with a paper goods and gift card food drive to support children experiencing homelessness in Guilford County.

Simone Langley is the chapter president. She said this is the second year the group is holding this event.

“We ask for diapers, sanitary napkins, paper products, and gift cards to local restaurants so that we can continue helping those in need,” Langley said. “Especially we want to make sure we help the children."

Langley said last year Beta Iota Omega was able to collect five truckloads of donated paper goods. She hopes the community can come together and continue to live out Dr. King's dream by surpassing that amount this year.

“This is a way to bring the attention to the community that we need to embrace each other and accept our differences and learn how to live safely, comfortably, and enjoyably with each other and we can do that if we can all come together and live out our purpose and that is a better place for everyone,” Langley said.

The MLK Freedom Walk is Monday, January 15 at Country Park behind the Greensboro Science Center. Registration is at 10:30 am and the walk will begin at 11 am.

Stephanie Mardis, Assistant Chief of the Greensboro Police Department, will lead the walk and give an inspirational message. She is this year’s honoree.

This year, Beta Iota Omega celebrates 90 years of service in the Greensboro community.
