HIGH POINT, N.C. — Open Door Ministries of High Point provided lunches to the community on Christmas Day.
The nonprofit organization is open 365 days a year and seven days a week to serve the community. One veteran and former client said he wanted to give back to the organization that helped him get back on his feet.
"I wanted to give my time back because I have my own apartment and I have a job at the Food Lion," Justin Beall said.
The nonprofit organization said they serve male clients like Beall at their shelter. Lately, they have seen a surge of families come in for help. In 2023 the organization is estimated to have fed nearly 80,000 people.
"We've gotten larger families. Back in April and May our food pantries was serving families of two to three people per family. We are now looking at families up the six to seven people," Ivan Huffman, the Director of Advancement for Open Door Ministries of High Point, said.
Huffman said the organization was looking forward to expanding its services in 2024.
"Our goal next year is to continue our preventative measures. Our emergency shelter and emergency assistance programs and our food programs are really there to help prevent homelessness," he said.
Open Door Ministries of High Point provides additional services including rental and utilities aid, transitional housing, and mobile meals.
