GREENSBORO, N.C. — Is a Piggly Wiggly still coming to Freeman Mill Square in Greensboro?

The answer is yes, according to Shaz Quamar, one of the developers of the mostly vacant shopping center at the corner of Freeman Mill Road and Florida Street, which sits in an underserved neighborhood that's a popular route for commuters into downtown Greensboro.

And a gas station is also on the way, said Quamar, who told Triad Business Journal he had talked with Valero (NYSE: VLO) and a few other gas retailers about the location. The developers would own the station, but hire an operator.

On Thursday afternoon, Quamar, who is teaming with Shahzad Akbar and other investors in revitalizing the shopping center across from Smith Homes affordable housing community, told TBJ that interior construction and upfitting of the Piggly Wiggly and other retail businesses had been delayed while waiting for the approval of plans by the city of Greensboro.
