'You just have to work with what you have' | WNC fighting for basic needs

One man who lives in Weaverville got enough service to share how he fared Hurricane Helene.

WEAVERVILLE, N.C. — For people living in western North Carolina communication has been limited. Wednesday WFMY News 2 touched base with a man who has had spotty service. He lives in Weaverville, north of Asheville.

Weaverville resident, Caleb Beasley sent WFMY News 2 videos of roads turned into rivers and homes that are no longer a safe place to stay.

The mountain town is still without power, Beasley said that is because crews have higher priorities.

"Most of the services have been focused on rescue. I know above my road there were at least 200 people stranded for several days," he recalled.

The river that flows near his home overtook yards, roads, and homes.

"The dam was going to break during the flooding. So, they decided to just release the water instead of it breaking. I think there was an evacuation around 6:00 a.m. but it definitely didn't get everybody," he exclaimed.

The river's strong current, put people in harms way.

"My landlord and I used some rope and ratchet straps to tie a slack line across two trees and help this woman out of her house. The water was kind of coming in under her foundation. So, we were worried it was going to give and she would go with it," he said.

For now, Beasley is waiting for basic needs to be restored. In the meantime, life as he knew it, on pause.

"The things that you're used to in your day-to-day life are definitely not accessible, but you just have to work with what you have, roll with the punches, and kind of get the community back and rolling again," he said.

Beasley wanted to shout out a woman named, Camille Mace. He said she is the owner of Wagon Wheel, a restaurant in Mars Hill. He said Hill has become an area hero by feeding hundreds.
