Managing relationships with different political views

Body Language Expert Blanca Cobb shares tips on how to navigate relationships with opposite political views.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — There are many differences in political opinions about the candidates and the upcoming election. It can be challenging to keep friendships with those with different viewpoints. Here are tips on how to keep your friendship solid when you disagree on politics.

Most people don't like heated conversations. It's important to respectfully communicate when you're hearing things you don’t like or don’t agree with. Try to understand your friend's perspective. Ask questions to understand. When you respond, answer thoughtfully in a way that explains your point of view without making them feel judged or criticized. The goal isn't to change anyone's mind. The goal should be to share opinions and understand each other.

If the conversation starts to get heated, then taking a break is okay. Talk about something different. When you're both calm, you can try again. It's also okay to agree to disagree and end the conversation.

Remember that differences of opinion are part of a friendship. Even with different perspectives on politics, you can find common ground. You might have different views on how to solve problems. Realize that there's more than one way to solve a problem. Political party aside, you can talk about aligned views.
