Loved ones share memories of woman killed in tragic I-40 crash

Greensboro police say Jane Alston died in a crash on I-40 Monday. Another woman died and her sister was hospitalized.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — One of the three women involved in the deadly crash left behind a 1-year-old daughter.

Her child’s father Kristian Coleman is heartbroken but said he'll stay strong for his daughter and hopes to be a beacon of hope to show others they can pull through just as his family will.

Coleman held his daughter close as he tried to accept that he’ll have to raise his one-year-old alone.

His child's mother, 22-year-old Jane Alston died in a terrifying car crash on 1-40 in Greensboro early Monday morning.

"No one wants to accept something like this, especially someone you’ve shared almost every day of your life with for the past few years," Coleman said.  "It's unreal."

Greensboro police said Alston was driving when she ran off the road at the Salem Parkway US 421 split.

Her close friend Shamanesha Hargrove and her sister were in the car.

Hargrove also died but her sister survived the crash.

The family said they were out celebrating Hargrove’s birthday.

"They were real close. She kept Alston's daughter. They went places together. I hugged her," said Sherita Alston, Jane's mother. "The day it happened that morning I saw both of them and I got to hug Neisha and it's sad because they were really close."

Police said the women were not wearing seat belts so when the roof ripped off after the car flipped all three were thrown from the car.

Sherita Alston said support from family is holding her together.

"That was my best friend she was my everything you know. So it hurts, god it hurts so bad," Alston said. "I want people to know she was a loving free spirit. I just hate it ended for her so quickly."

"Honestly this Is like the crash heard around the city because they were very well known," Coleman said. "So this impacted a lot of people. There’s no easy way to take this. We hall have to stay strong."

Coleman said he’ll wait until the time is right to tell his daughter, knowing nothing will be the same after that.

We're waiting for an update from Greensboro police on what caused the crash.
