GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro police are investigating a single-car crash that turned deadly overnight Monday.

Just after midnight, officers responded to I-40 West at the Salem Parkway/US 421 split (exit 206) where they found a single-car crash. They said two women died at the scene and a third one was hospitalized.

A 2014 Hyundai Elantra was westbound on I-40 and ran off the road to the right at the split onto the median area. The car hit the ravine and began to flip, striking several trees. The roof came off the car and the three women were not wearing a seatbelt, according to police.

The driver was identified as Jane Mary Alston, 22. She and passenger Shamanesha Hargrove, 25, died at the scene.

The third passenger, Shannetta Hargrove, 22, was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

This investigation is ongoing.
