Support pours in for sick shop owner in Greensboro

Friends and customers of Merrit White rallied to raise money for him after learning about his cancer diagnosis.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Friends and customers of a Greensboro shop owner rushed to raise thousands of dollars after learning the owner had cancer.

Merrit White had to shut down his bike shop on Spring Garden Street because of his diagnosis.

Those close to him organized a raffle to raise money. Two shops helped build a new bike for the event.

It ended up raising more than $4,500 for White.

One of his friends said the support is simply people returning a favor.

"He's been a guy that's helped me out in situations like that," a friend of the owner, Kevin Bond said. "I've sat in his shop and watched him give people a price break if they can't afford it. He has done so much for the community that the community felt compelled to help him."
