Former gasman of Dale Earnhardt Sr. has a rare lymphoma but it isn't slowing him down

Mantle Cell Lymphoma isn't slowing down Danny 'Chocolate' Myers at all. He's worked side by side with Richard Childress since childhood.

LEXINGTON, N.C. — The world of Danny 'Chocolate' Myers revolves around racing, it always has.

Myers was in high spirits as he signed autographs, took photos with fans and heard all about the prayers sent his way during his journey battling cancer.

It's a rare form of lymphoma but Myers doesn't let it slow him down.

"When you think of RCR, you probably think of my grandfather and Chocolate Myers," NASCAR Driver, Austin Dillon said.

Myers has worked side by side with Richard Childress since childhood and was the longtime gasman of Dale Earnhardt Sr. until his death in 2001.

Although he was not on the track racing, he was on the track working. Throughout the years, he's built quite the fan base.

He now lives by the words, 'no race fans, means no racing' he explained:

"When you go from a competitor to a fan, you see it entirely different. Look, I sit down and watch the races. Do I have a few folks I wanna see run better than others? Sure, I do! But I enjoy the show and it took me a while to realize, if those people weren't in the stands, if they weren't buying those sponsored products… then we're not doing this right."

Myers was experiencing stomach pain toward the end of 2022. After a trip to the emergency room, a few tests confirmed the worst, Myers was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of lymphoma, called Mantle Cell Lymphoma.

Just a few months back, Myers rung the victory bell at Duke after going into clinical remission.

"Look, I tell anybody and everybody, if you've got a bad cancer story, don't tell me. I only want to hear the good ones, I'm trying to be as positive as I can and I've done a really good job with that," Myers said.

To this day, he's still getting maintenance chemo and immunotherapy every other month. Events like Fan Day at RCR and the fans themselves are helping Myers remain positive.

Although Mantle Cell Lymphoma is not completely curable, Myers continues to work as an RCR Museum curator and SirusXM Nascar radio host, continuing to live in the world of racing.
