Vault Visit | Greensboro City Schools first day for superintendent W.J. House

On March 19, 1969 — the first day on the job for Greensboro City Schools Superintendent W.J. House. He faced problems that were very similar to today’s educators.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75. To celebrate our diamond anniversary, we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

March 19, 1969, was the first day on the job for Greensboro City Schools Superintendent W.J. House.

The school board elected House to the position of succeeding Philip Weaver. Weaver had been superintendent for 11 years but died of a heart attack days before.

House shared his most pressing challenge, which may sound familiar.

"I think that we will continue to be concerned with the teacher shortage. I think that the problem of recruiting top-level people into teacher education, ultimately into the teacher-teaching profession, and then providing the means to keep them in the profession will be a continuing concern," House said.

House went on to serve as the Greensboro City Schools Superintendent until 1977.
