CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75! So, to celebrate, we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.
In March 2001, the FBI investigated a bizarre case in Chatham County.
In February 2000, the Chatham County Sheriff's Office confiscated more than 5500 pounds of marijuana in a drug raid.
That's two-and-a-half tons of weed worth around $5 million.
Officials stored it in a truck on the sheriff's office property.
When deputies went to move it, they discovered three thousand pounds of it was gone!
“If they're telling the truth, no one periodically checked the dope to make sure it was in there. No one knew until it was taken to the dump,” officials said.
Officials buried the remaining 2000 pounds of marijuana in a county dump.
But weeks later, someone broke into the landfill and dug it up. And stole that, too!
