Vault Visit: Why were gas prices so high in 2001?

On April 17, 2001, gas was $1.57 a gallon! The average cost of a gallon of regular gas in Greensboro is $3.41 right now, up from $3.30 at the same time last year.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75! So, to celebrate, we're opening the WFMY News 2 Vault.

Today, we're going back to 2001 to talk about gas prices.

On April 17, 2001, gas was $1.57 a gallon!  At the time, that was a story because it had jumped 14 cents in about a week.

We spoke with a gas station owner who said the refiners set his prices, and they'd taken a hit, too.

"In reality, gasoline has gone up to us almost 20 cents a gallon since the first of this month," the owner shared.

So, the gas stations had to increase their prices at the pump to keep operating.

Of course, we'd take anything for $1.57 gas these days.

However, AAA said the average cost of a gallon of regular gas in Greensboro is $3.41 right now, up from $3.30 at the same time last year.
