GREENSBORO, N.C. —

Red Flag Warning / Fire Weather Warning

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for much of the Triad through 8 p.m. this evening due to fires that can spread easily and get out of control. This is due to gusty winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures across the area.

WINDS: Winds will be sustained this afternoon and early evening out of the west between 10-15 mph. Gustys may be able to exceed 30+ mph. Gusty winds can help fires spread easier.

LOW HUMIDITY: Dewpoints across the Piedmont are stuck in the 20s, meaning the air is bone-dry, and fine fuels (such as grass) become drier. Fires can thrive as a result of the dry conditions.

WARMTH: Temperatures will likely exceed the normal for this time of year, making it deep in the 60s to near 70 this afternoon. Warmer air creates a better environment for fires to spark.

The Red Flag Warning will remain in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday. Relief from fire weather will come Friday as rain chances spike late in the evening through early Saturday. Click here for the latest forecast for the next seven days.

THINGS YOU CAN DO OR AVOID:

Avoid burning in your area.

Do NOT throw cigarettes or matches out of a vehicle in motion — they could ignite grass and potentially cause a wildfire.

Make sure you extinguish all outdoor fires: use plenty of water.

NEVER leave a fire unattended.
