Winter shows up early! We'll dip into the 20s tonight

We dip into the 20s as we head into Thursday, but things will warm up a bit during the day.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Hello, Winter? Is that you?

No, not really, but it's our coldest shot of air since late last year. As we headed deeper into Fall and closer to winter, the cooler days start to become routine and the cold snaps become a bit more common. Wednesday was our coldest morning of the year so far that greeted us out the door in the Triad with many spots dipping into the 10s!

Most of the Triad area dipped into the upper 10s, but even a few spots ended up in the low to mid 10s.

Our coldest spot on the map this morning was Martinsville, VA just to our north, over the border. That station dipped down to 12°! 19° was our low temperature in Greensboro this morning. The record is 16° for Greensboro, but a few outlying spots came close to that. Our low of 19° this morning makes it the coldest we've been since December 26th, last year. You might remember that really cold snap of weather we had around Christmas time that year. During that streak of cold weather, we got down to 5° on Christmas Eve morning.

It wasn't only the cold air working for us last night, but also the lack of clouds and light winds. If those things are present then we can stay a little warmer, but that wasn't the case overnight. With clear sky and light winds, it's easy to cool off fast.

Temperatures were chilly throughout the whole day. High temperatures in the mid-40s made for our coldest afternoon since we had a day in the 30s back in mid-March, 8 months ago.

The average high temperature for this time of year is 56.
