NC is in a drought: Here's the last time we had measurable rain

Only minimal chances for rain for the foreseeable future

GREENSBORO, N.C. — We can't seem to even buy a good rain around here lately, which seems crazy after our second wettest May on record for the Triad. We're going on three weeks without any measurable rainfall for the Triad. Even after a surplus of rain to start the year, our dry and hot weather this time of the year can really use up those resources and we're starting to notice it now with crunchy and crispy yards, and plants starving for a drink of water.

Looking at the numbers, we're currently tied in first place for our longest stretch of dry weather in the last five years. If no rain falls out at PTI Airport in Greensboro Thursday, we'll take the number one spot.

Sure, you may have had a passing shower or two in the last few weeks in your neighborhood, but where records are kept at Piedmont Triad International Airport, it's been bone dry.

We'll likely take the number one spot after today.

The last time we had measurable rain in Greensboro was on June 9th.

Basically all of NC is abnormally dry, much of the state in a moderate drought.

Our latest drought report out today takes in to account our lack of rain. One week ago, we were just abnormally dry across much of North Carolina. Now, basically all of our state is at least abnormally dry, with over half of the state in a moderate drought, and getting worse until we get some good widespread rain.

Looking ahead over the next week, we still don't have much of a chance for beneficial rain, but instead only chances for pop up showers and storms - typical summertime weather.
