GREENSBORO, N.C. — Departments across the city of Greensboro have started preparations for potential impacts from Tropical Storm Debby.
They have launched proactive steps in anticipation of flash flooding given the predictions of heavy rainfall Tuesday-Thursday.
Those include:
- The Water Resources Department has deployed a trailer of equipment to high flood-prone areas. Crews are also working to check creeks and culverts for potential debris buildup. During the storm, they will be on standby to assist other departments as needed.
- Throughout Tuesday, Transportation Department crews will deliver equipment to other high-priority sites, including S. Elm-Eugene Street, Yanceyville Street near Revolution Mill, Pinecroft Road, and Old Battleground Road. The police and fire departments will also assist to pre-stage traffic-control devices in areas that have a tendency to flood.
- The Solid Waste and Recycling Department is also deploying heavy equipment in case it is required to remove downed trees. Parks and Recreation Department crews will be on call to monitor for trees blocking streets and clear them as needed.

Additionally, Greensboro Stormwater Superintendent, Ray Johnson said the city has low laying areas residents need to be aware of.
"Any really along North Buffalo, South Buffalo Creek, they are higher flood probabilities just because they are the two main tributaries that run through the city. So, if you're in proximity to those, just be aware of your surroundings," explained Johnson.
If residents run into trouble spots throughout the city during the storm, Johnson requests people call 336-373-CITY to report those events.

Power outages
- Stay informed. Keep a battery-powered radio or a hand-crank radio to stay updated on weather alerts and emergency information.
- Prepare an emergency kit with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, and necessary medications.
- Unplug electrical appliances and electronics to prevent damage from power surges when electricity is restored.
- Use flashlights instead of candles to reduce fire risk.
Generator safety
- Outdoor use only: Always operate generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas, away from windows, doors, and vents, to prevent carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
- Proper installation: Ensure generators are correctly installed and maintained. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and have a licensed electrician perform any necessary wiring.
- Fuel storage: Storage fuel in a safe, approved container, and never refuel a generator while it is running or hot.
- CO alarms: Install battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors in your home and check them regularly to ensure they function correctly.
Flood Preparedness
- Evacuation plan: Know your evacuation routes and have a plan for your family and pets.
- Avoid flood waters: Never attempt to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters, "Turn around, don't drown."
- If time allows, move valuable items to higher ground to protect them from flood damage.
- Be aware of flash flood warnings and move to higher ground immediately if flooding occurs.
