'I never thought this storm was going to do this damage,' Randolph County family O.K. after tree damages home

Sanjuana Castillo walked through the front door--moments later a tree fell on her porch.

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — Heavy storms brought rain across the Triad Thursday but in Randolph County wind caused a lot of damage.

"We just heard the rain and the wind and then the tree fell over," said Liberty resident Sanjuana Castillo.

A large pine fell towards her house, damaging the gutters but leaving most of the home untouched.

She said she didn't hear the tree fall over the sound of the wind.

She was frightened when she looked back out the door and saw the tree.

"I told the kids, 'Go hide in the bathroom' because I have other trees nearby," said Castillo, "'just stay there until I tell you it's safe' because I didn't know what else was gonna happen."

The Castillo family weren't the only ones who saw damage in the Liberty area. Large trees along with power and utility lines were brought down by winds that residents said were tornado-like along Old Liberty Road.

The National Weather Service has not confirmed a tornado in that area.

The wind surprised residents during the storm that mostly brought flash flooding threats.

"I never thought this storm was going to damage our house," said Castillo.
