When will the wind die down?

Wind finally relaxes by Sunday

GREENSBORO, N.C. — After a busy night of storms across the Piedmont on Thursday, many folks will be cleaning up damage today and through the weekend, even for weeks to months working to rebuild structures that were ripped apart. The national weather service will travel to Wilkes County today to survey damage from a confirmed tornado that created a path of damage through the county. That report will come out later this afternoon.

Our weather is improving today with some sunshine returning, but even now that storms are gone, we're still windy, and it'll take a little while for it to finally relax.

So, if the storms are gone, why is still windy? We're still feeling the influence of our big storm system. As an upper-level area of low pressure still spins to our north, we'll feel the wind still whipping. This is a big, strong area of low pressure, and as high pressure is building in to our south, it creates a big difference, or a tight pressure "gradient". A big difference like that creates wind, so as long as our system is close to us, it'll stay windy.

As this area of low pressure rotates counterclockwise today, a fast-moving piece of energy around the system could bring us a few isolated showers this evening, but don't expect much rain from it.

Winds could still gust from 30-40 mph at times through this afternoon. While a few gusts of this strength likely won't cause any damage, prolonged periods of higher wind could cause a few more trees to fall and subsequently, a few power outages across the area.

Our wind will relax some overnight but stays a bit breezy for Saturday as high pressure takes more control over our weather. By Sunday, the wind won't be a concern for our area, as comfy weather returns for the end of the weekend and into much of next week. We could even see the mid-80s by the middle of the week.

It may seem like we've had a lot of wind lately, and you wouldn't be wrong! However, it's not really out of the ordinary, especially in springtime. Spring can be our busiest weather time of the year, and our most stormy time of the year, too. As we undergo the transition from Winter to Summer, we see several different weather systems move our way. Those systems can be quite strong if there's a big difference or change in the weather, or air mass. Those big differences can create a lot of wind and of course, some storms, like we saw Thursday night.

So, knowing that it would make sense that we have a lot of wind. It's no surprise that, historically, our three windiest months of the year, turn out to be right in the middle of this big season shift in February, March, and April.
