Why aren't we getting a big snow? WFMY News 2 Weather team explains the setup

Sorry, snow lovers. We won't be getting much. Here's what needs to happen for us to get a "good" snow.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — WFMY NEWS 2 WEATHER | On Monday, we will see a few rain and snow showers throughout the day and into the evening. However, little if any accumulation is expected and roads are expected to remain ice-free.

THE SET UP FOR TODAY'S EVENT

This weather system is coming from the west. This is not a favored way for us to get snow here in the Piedmont. This is an upper-level disturbance and surface trough of low pressure. It is a fast-moving system and has limited moisture. Most of the moisture falls as snow in the Virginia and North Carolina Mountains. Those areas could get several inches of snow by tonight.

For us to get a good snow, low pressure would have to track out of the Gulf of Mexico. These weather systems are usually loaded with moisture. Also, a source of cold air from New England would have to be in place. Today's system is the wrong setup. Snow lovers, hang in there. We have plenty of time left this winter to get a weather system that will bring us a good snow.

WHAT YOUR FORECAST TEAM SEES FOR TONIGHT

Most of our area has been in a lull for most of Monday afternoon and evening. In the Foothills, some sleet and snow showers continue. It will be mostly cloudy across the area overnight, with a few stray rain or snow showers possible.

In the Foothills, where the Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect, some icy patches are likely to develop on some roads. School districts are adjusting for this, check our closing and delays list.

In the Triad, while a few stray sprinkles or light rain showers are possible overnight and tomorrow morning we expect temperatures to hover at or above freezing. This should prevent any icy patches from developing.

Throughout the day on Tuesday, our system will exit and we will dry out quite a bit. Any stray rain showers will be gone by midday. Some clearing sky is possible by the late afternoon. Breezes will pick up.

Once this system moves out, the coldest air of the season will invade the Piedmont. The first shot of Arctic air arrives Tuesday night and Wednesday. A second batch arrives this weekend. Highs will be in the 30s with lows in the teens. A stiff wind will make it feel evening colder. It would be a good idea to make sure water pipes are wrapped securely around your house and check the antifreeze in your car.
